Community Sketchbook Project – Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre
21 Jul 2020, Posted by #artsnewydd, Community, Exhibitions, Out & About, Published, Social Media, Wales, Work in progress inThis week’s post is dedicated to Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre in Cwmbran. I was truly delighted to see on Friday evening just gone work I has submitted to their Community Sketchbook project pop up online.
Delayed due to COVID-19, Llantarnam Granges’ > latest / current / future? < exhibition would have been Sketchbooks – their first self-curated exhibition with Louise Jones-Williams as Director, featuring work by Keith Bayliss, Rachel Larkins, Rozanne Hawksley and Billy Adams plus more! It was a show to look forward to without doubt, but with the art centre building unable to open during COVID-19, the exhibition was not able to go forward as planned.
And then, something wonderful happened. LGAC adapted the exhibition (with agreement of the artists) to share the work online. To support this, the team at LGAC went on to invited submissions from the community for an accompanying project called Community Sketchbook.

“Sketchbooks are multidisciplinary and can be physical or digital. They are an essential part of the creative process… Our Sketchbooks exhibition will be rearranged and will be accompanied by a new project. We are inviting submissions from our wonderful community, to be part of a Community Sketchbook. Art has the ability to bring us together and act as an important tool for our well being and we want to share our creativity and imagination in lockdown. The images we receive will be shared on social media and shown on screens as part of the exhibition next year.”
Diolch yn fawr iawn LGAC for giving people the opportunity to take part in your community sketchbook project – it’s been great to see other artist’s sketchbook work during lock down, and I can’t wait to see more appear online. See their Facebook for more work from Sketchbooks as well as submissions to their Community Sketchbook exhibition, and get updates on when LGAC will reopen to the public.
