About Post-Industrial

Newport Museum and Art Gallery has been collecting objects to do with Newport’s history, culture and environment since 1888. Using this as their starting point, local artists Sarah Goodey, Dean Lewis and Kate Mercer have created artwork inspired by this collection and the city they live in.

Using photography, illustration and textiles, each artist has used the museum’s collection to explore the effect industrialisation had on Newport’s environment, its architecture and most importantly its people. Living locally, the artists feel it is important that our community and its industrial heritage are celebrated. Featuring pieces from the museum’s collection alongside their work, each artist seeks to bring to life moments in Newport’s history that are important to tell.

All artists would like to thank Newport Museum and Art Gallery for the opportunity to work with their collections and for supporting them to share this work back into our community.

About Sarah Goodey

Sarah Goodey is a fine artist based in Newport who works with photography, mutlimedia, story and site-specific installation. Scale, texture and form can abstract the familiar and challenge our understanding of both the post-industrial and natural landscape, as one evolves into the other and back again.

Am Ôl-ddiwydiannol

Mae Amgueddfa ac Oriel Gelf Casnewydd wedi bod yn casglu gwrthrychau’n ymwneud â hanes, diwylliant ac amgylchedd Casnewydd ers 1888.  Gan ddefnyddio hyn fel man cychwyn, mae’r artistiaid lleol Sarah Goodey, Dean Lewis a Kate Mercer wedi creu gwaith celf wedi’i ysbrydoli gan y casgliad hwn a’r ddinas y maent yn byw ynddi.

Gan ddefnyddio ffotograffiaeth, darlunio a thecstilau, mae pob artist wedi defnyddio casgliad yr amgueddfa i archwilio’r effaith gafodd diwydiannu ar amgylchedd Casnewydd, ei phensaernïaeth ac yn bwysicaf oll, ei phobl. Yn byw’n lleol, mae’r artistiaid yn teimlo ei fod yn bwysig dathlu ein cymuned a’i threftadaeth ddiwydiannol. Yn cynnwys darnau o gasgliad yr amgueddfa ynghyd â’u gwaith, mae pob artist yn ceisio dod ag adegau pwysig yn hanes Casnewydd yn fyw.

Dymuna pob artist ddiolch i Amgueddfa ac Oriel Gelf Casnewydd am y cyfle i weithio gyda’u casgliadau ac am eu cynorthwyo i rannu’r gwaith hwn yn ein cymuned.

Am Sarah Goodey

Mae Sarah Goodey yn artist gwych o Gasnewydd sy’n gweithio gyda ffotograffiaeth, amlgyfrwng, stori a gosodwaith safle-benodol. Gall graddfa, gwead a ffurf symud y cyfarwydd a herio ein dealltwriaeth o’r dirwedd ôl-ddiwydiannol a naturiol, wrth i un esblygu i’r llall ac yn ôl eto.

Am Dean Lewis

Mae Dean Lewis yn ddarlunydd llawrydd o Gasnewydd. Astudiodd Animeiddio yng Ngholeg Prifysgol Cymru, Casnewydd. Dros yr 20 mlynedd diwethaf mae Dean wedi gweithio mewn Unedau Cyfeirio Disgyblion yn addysgu TGCh, dylunio graffeg, celf a chreu ymyriadau rhifedd a lles i bobl ifanc sy’n agored i niwed.

Mae’n gweithio’n ddigidol ac mewn pen ac inc. Mae’r rhan fwyaf o’i waith yn cyfeirio at dirweddau ôl-ddiwydiannol fel ffatrïoedd segur yn aml yn canolbwyntio ar gyfosodiad natur a strwythurau wedi’u gwneud gan ddyn sydd bellach yn rhwd a malurion concrid.

Mae Amgueddfa ac Oriel Gelf Casnewydd wedi bod yn casglu tystiolaeth o hanes, diwylliant ac amgylchedd y ddinas ers 1888.
