Without Borders / ART SPOT KORIN
01 Dec 2021, Posted by #artsnewydd, Community, Exhibitions, In the news, International, Newport, Out & About, Swansea, Wales, Work in progress inIn a blog post earlier this year > Without Borders / Elysium & 1SSUE < I wrote about taking part in this group project which saw 300+ artists from around the world collaborate in creating an international touring exhibition of works on paper. After each exhibition, the pages will be bound together to make a book and taken to another venue to be taken apart, displayed, and then reassembled before moving again to its next location. At the end of the tour, the artworks will permanently be bound together to create one unique artist book.
The Swansea leg of the show at Elysium Gallery ran between Saturday 17th July – Saturday 28th August 2021. This week, Without Borders opened at Art Spot Korin in Kyoto, Japan. It will be on display from Tuesday 30th November – Sunday 12th December 2021.
During 2022, the exhibition will continue next on to Norway, USA, Venice, Canada, before making it’s final journey back to Wales.

The full touring schedule for the remaining countries and venues will be announced in the New Year. Heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in the production and logistics of this project – no mean feat especially during a pandemic! It’s been a joy to be a part of and see evolve.

About the project
Curated by Jonathan Powell, Elysium gallery Director and Heather Parnell, co-editor of 1SSUE artist books. The project salutes the diversity of creativity, showcasing the work of all participating artists democratically, in a format that is portable and accessible. The ‘Artists Book’ serves as the vessel and sets the parameters into the exploration of the notion of Borders.
The term Border describes literal or invisible lines: edges that separate and divide, that contain and limit. Without Borders is particularly evocative and redolent in these current times. Ever- quickening, reactive politics results in some borders hardening, whilst others dissolve. The divide between rich and poor appears to be widening. Physical, geographical, and social borders, together with the fragile, permeable border between life and death have also been highlighted by the recent pandemic.
About Art Spot Korin
Art Spot Korin is a small gallery in front of the old gate of Gion, Kyoto. Although it is a small space, we aim to show and convey the fun and importance of making things. We are also focusing on exhibition support and overseas exchange.

About 1SSUE artist books
These began in Cardiff in 2002, initiated by Richard Cox. 1SSUE is now co-edited by Richard, Heather Parnell, Hilary Wagstaff and Phil Mead. Each 1SSUE is a generous collaboration between artists resulting in unique, imaginative and diverse, experimental, and playful pages, often breaking with book and page conventions. Ynglŷn â’r prosiect
Curadwyd gan Jonathan Powell, Cyfarwyddwr Oriel Elysium a Heather Parnell, cyd-olygydd llyfrau artistiaid 1SSUE. Mae’r prosiect yn cyfarch amrywiaeth creadigrwydd, gan arddangos gwaith yr holl artistiaid sy’n cymryd rhan yn ddemocrataidd, mewn fformat sy’n gludadwy ac yn hygyrch. Mae’r ‘Artists Book’ yn gwasanaethu fel y llong ac yn gosod y paramedrau wrth archwilio syniad y Gororau.
Mae’r term Border yn disgrifio llinellau llythrennol neu anweledig: ymylon sy’n gwahanu ac yn rhannu, sy’n cynnwys ac yn cyfyngu. Mae Heb Ffiniau yn arbennig o atgofus ac yn llawen yn yr amseroedd presennol hyn. Mae gwleidyddiaeth ymatebol sy’n cyflymu byth yn arwain at galedu rhai ffiniau, tra bod eraill yn hydoddi. Mae’n ymddangos bod y rhaniad rhwng y cyfoethog a’r tlawd yn ehangu. Mae ffiniau corfforol, daearyddol a chymdeithasol, ynghyd â’r ffin fregus, athraidd rhwng bywyd a marwolaeth hefyd wedi cael eu hamlygu gan y pandemig diweddar.
Am Art Spot Korin
Oriel fach o flaen hen giât Gion, Kyoto yw Art Spot Korin. Er mai gofod bach ydyw, ein nod yw dangos a chyfleu hwyl a phwysigrwydd gwneud pethau. Rydym hefyd yn canolbwyntio ar gymorth arddangosfeydd a chyfnewid tramor.

Tua llyfrau artistiaid 1SSUE
Dechreuodd y rhain yng Caerdydd yn 2002, a gychwynnwyd gan Richard Cox. Bellach mae 1SSUE wedi’i gyd-olygu gan Richard, Heather Parnell, Hilary Wagstaff a Phil Mead. Mae pob 1SSUE yn gydweithrediad hael rhwng artistiaid sy’n arwain at dudalennau unigryw, dychmygus ac amrywiol, arbrofol a chwareus, yn aml yn torri gyda chonfensiynau llyfrau a thudalennau. Mae mwy na 100 o artistiaid wedi cymryd rhan yn 1SSUE hyd yma.
